Kendrick Lamar-DAMN. Review

                         DAMN. is the fourth-studio album by Compton artist Kendrick Lamar. Coming into this album, i didn't know what to expect. Should I listen for hard beats, for profound lyrics with a message that will resonate deep within my soul ? I can honestly say that DAMN. exceeded all of my expectations and has shown me things i've never heard before. DAMN. plays out more as a concept than just a regular album. Each song seems to play an intrical part in this overall bigger story. To me, the album played out as if it was an internal story going on in the mind of the man we see on the cover art. 

                        Kendrick depicts himself in a very honest state, that is difficult to pinpoint exactly what he is feeling or thinking, but that's exactly how the album feels. It's not just one thing. Each song has it's own identity, vibe, and sound. His voice changes with every song, and he truly shows why he is one of the best ever, and more than a rapper, he is an artist. DAMN. is brutally honest, with songs on the subjects and literal names of 'LUST.', 'FEAR.', 'PRIDE.', 'GOD.', and many more. What I love about Kendrick as an artist is his attention to detail and his delivery. Every single word seemed to be pre-meditated. He also captures what life is like in the hood, and the culture of said environment. The songs on this album have many deep cuts, and will possibly make you feel uncomfortable at certain points, but that's what true art should do. 

                          I like to define Kendrick as a progressive rapper. He has the progression of a true artist, but still retains the core aspects of rap/hip hop (bragging,dissing,etc.). The album even utilizes legendary DJ Kid Capri in a unique way. You can't get more street than Kid Capri ! "Ain't nobody prayin' for me" is a common thread that ties this album all together. It's ultimately pain, and sorrow that come through in these songs. Anger, jealousy, anxiety, sex, violence, and motivations. Kendrick's words come together more and more and become more relevant and impactful with every listen, ending on a perfect note that will leave you breathless (without giving away any spoilers). DAMN. is lasting, powerful, innovative, and a true work of art. It's an experience all music lovers should have. At it's core, DAMN. is a truly human experience.
