The Staves- If I Was Review

'If I Was' is the second studio album by English Folk Rock band The Staves. The Staves consist of three sisters going by the last name Staveley-Taylor, hence their group name. This album was recorded at April Base in Wisconsin, which is a studio run by Bon Iver's Justin Vernon. You can hear Bon Iver's influence on this album, them being a collaborator. The Staves shine through with their angelic harmonies and warm sound. You can literally feel their sisterhood and lineage through their voices. Each song is a perfect mix of vocals over piano, acoustic guitar, warm bass tones, and soft but powerful drumming.
I say angelic because The Staves have a graceful way about them where their voices flow ever so gently in and out of each other. A lot of the lyrics deal with love, relationships, inadequacy, desire, and being tired. The Staves do a great job of addressing deep human emotions that we all feel, but ultimately affirming life with strength, heart, and grace. 'If I Was' is a beautiful album that is delivered beautifully and will have you coming back for more.
